Watched Goodnight Sweetheart last night on catch up ... The best of these and clearly as you would be interested in the characters - as played by the (last) actors .. It actually worked and was quite good ... But my god Ron (ex Jack Boswell from Bread) has added a couple of extra pounds !!!

the only way it will work is if iplayer can only be accessed by someone with a license. they'll give you a reference or login code if you pay the license. if they think they'll enforce it through goodwill then they're living on cloud cuckoo land

An important aspect - for the government, at least - is the fact that, given nearly every household in the UK owns a TV, the data held by the TVLC is a goldmine of free (or rather licence-payer funded) information about virtually half the adult population, and, combined with council tax data, nearly everybody. Those not are identifiable directly are then a doddle to track down.

The iPlayer tax is going to be an interesting one to administer and collect. Every computer is capable of having iPlayer installed on it, so EVERY household with a computer/tablet/smartphone will become liable. How they then gather the required tax from people using it in a public place, like a park, beach, bar, shopping mall or railway station should be interesting.

They are changing it to anyone who owns anything you could potentially watch iplayer on aren't they? That means everyone really...

I did do but just told them I don't watch tv. At my previous address one of those detector vans turned up one morning ,bloke with what looked like a coat hanger attached to an old mobile phone and he was waving it around the exterior of my house.

I just refuse to pay it, I don't watch enough TV to justify the fee.

Why would you pay for something you dont use? no matter how small the amount.

£12 a month...might as well just pay it surely.

I don't pay the TV licence, I don't see how they can enforce it.

When you see old clips of the news and TV reporting generally, there was no narrative, generally just an attempt to communicate what was happening and factual. Oh how I wish for those days. Journalists now all go through media and related training / education and have to come up with an angle or "story" or as I said have predefined narrative. Everything's a fvcking travellog, emotive music for documentaries, a 10 min fact spun out to an hour's "entertanment".

BBC editors set the tone or theme. Example is anti Brexit more recently. Impartiality my arse. Always a tacit reference to the negative consequences that will ensue even though they haven't :-)

Political correctness was needed at one time to start addressing the ignorance etc but the pendulum has swung too far. Count up the presenters, reporters from minority races, cultures etc... and it is highly disproportionate to the percentage of said minorities in the population. Just over compensation in the extreme. BBC management and other TV and media owners and management and editors taking it upon themselves to educate the ingrates and unwashed masses. Conceited, narcissistic, self important, elitist middle class. oxbridge types who due to their sheltered education and upbringing and comfortable lives, are classic "dont know what they dont know", superior thinkers who know whats best for everyone. Ahh thats better, rant over.

Don't watch the BBC and never will again. I see they even persist with the ridiculous licence fee which is just another indirect tax. BBC is passe in the extreme IMO.

Half the morning news is taken up by them telling you what reality tv show is on in the evening and having them on the news.
Every time I put it on this week there were two women presenting the news very flippantly like it was an entertainment programme not the BBC news

Spot on Mike. Even the news is now poor. They no longer report they decide what the angle should be. I cannot stand them.

I just wish they would go back to what they used to do what they did best.

Quota filling was one of the last nails for me. One woman had to be on comedy panels etc.

We had quota bingo the other night with that shower that was 'New York, America's busiest city. Asian bird?, Check, black man, check. Black man in a wheelchair ?, Bonus points.

The programme was just fucking poor. Oh look at me I'm using a ticket machine on a subway. Oh, its rush hour, ooh it's a bit busy. Oh new York is developing a new solution to overcrowding on the travel network.

It's called cross rail you turds, and you have rush hour and ticket machines in London too. An absolute waste of time.

The only good thing about TDUDP was Alf's missus. The rest of 'em, and the show were toilet.
I would love to see all the shows back on, but I know that's never going to happen.

The BBC was king of information in Oxsaw Senior Mansions as I was growing up. Commercial television was about as welcome as a fart in a space-suit; it wasn't banned, but father tended to treat it and anything it offered with near contempt (but he tolerated it, as he was wise enough to know (most) growing kids rebel and push barriers & windows).

In a way, he had a point - back then, the BBC was virtually a forerunner to what evolved into the Open University - structured education for the masses, and yet I do recall with some considerable warmth much of what we watched.

My first, I suppose, awareness of a "challenge" to the establishment was "Magpie" being put out against "Blue Peter"; "go for it" against "do your duty". I'm sure there's a direct route from Magpie to Tizwaz and then OTT, so maybe papa had a case.

Somewhere along the line, however, the BBC began chasing ratings and audience figures as if that was the be all and end all of public service broadcasting. From that point on, it's descent into a pile of steaming, odorous shit was merely a matter of when, not if.
